Scope and policy

Pensamiento Psicológico represents an opportunity for the publication of research findings in the field of basic and applied psychology and disciplines related to mental heath, human wellbeing and the quality of life.


Form and preparation of manuscripts



Pensamiento Psicológico is a peer-reviewed scientific journal which offers an opportunity for the publication of research findings in the field of basic and applied psychology, and of disciplines related to mental health, human welfare and the quality of life. Its aim is to become a privileged means of circulation for academics and researchers of psychology and disciplines related to national and international matters. It is published on a half-yearly basis by the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Cali, Colombia.

The journal is circulated among professional people, researchers and students of the social and health sciences, in the American continent as well as in other parts of the world. The journal has its own web site,, which offers free access to all of its contents.

Pensamiento Psicológico is indexed in PsycINFO from the American Psychological Association (APA), Latin-American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences - LILACS, the Latin-American Index of Scientific and Technological Journals - LATINDEX, in the National Index of Serialized Scientific and Technological Publications - PUBLINDEX of Colombia. It is also registered in data bases such as the Scientific Journal Network of Latin America and the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal, Social Sciences and Humanities - REDALYC, Latin American quotations in Social Sciences and Humanities - CLASE (México), DIALNET of Spain, Directory of Open Access Journals-DOAJ of Switzerland; ProQuest (USA) and the Virtual Library of Health and Psychology - Colombia.



The primary objective of Pensamiento Psicológico is the publication of empirical or theoretical research articles which present original results of completed studies in a detailed and systematic manner. Such articles are especially welcome and should make a significant contribution to the field of psychology and its connections with similar disciplines.

The manuscripts must be divided into the following categories, corresponding to the Introduction, Method, Results and Discussion (IMRD) format.

  • Introduction: The development and background information of the problema clear description of the objectives of the study.
  • Method: A description of the type of study, ethical considerations, sampling, participants or units of observation/analysis, procedure, instruments or techniques for gathering information, and data analysis.
  • Results: A clear and descriptive report of the results of the study.
  • Discussion: The analysis, interpretation and discussion of the results in thecontext of other similar or different conceptual or empirical referents. The presentation of the strengths and weaknesses of the study, as well as a general conclusion.

Research articles of a theoretical nature, sometimes referred to as review articles, present the results of completed research in which the results of published or unpublished research are analyzed, organized, and compiled with the intention of setting out clearly the advances and trends in the development of the case, the field of psychology, and related disciplines. Systematic reviews, metaanalysis, bibliometric studies are considered in this type of study, and are required to include a meticulous bibliographical review of at least 50 references.

2. SHORT REPORTS. Brief manuscripts which show partial and original results of research, which require early publication.

3. CASE REPORTS. Manuscripts which contain results of the study of a particular situation with the aim of presenting the technical and methodological experiences considered in a specific case. These include a systematic review with observations of literature on comparable cases.

The main content of Pensamiento Psicológico is complemented by other types of document, such as:

  1. REVIEWS. A document which is the result of a critical literature review on a particular subject.
  2. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. A manuscript which presents critical, analytical or interpretative points of view on articles published in Pensamiento Psicológico, and which, in the opinion of the Editorial Committee make an important contribution to the discussion of the subject by the scientific community.
  3. TRANSLATIONS. Translations of classical or up-to-date texts, transcriptions of historical documents, or those of special interest in the scope of publication of Pensamiento Psicológico.
  4. BIBLIOGRAPHICAL REVIEWS of recently published books which are important to the advancement of the field of Psychology, and related disciplines in areas of mental health, human welfare, and the quality of life.


  • APA FORMAT. Pensamiento Psicológico observes the guidelines set out in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. These guidelines are also known as "APA Norms", and can be consulted via this link: together with specific examples in the REFERENCE section.
  • LANGUAGE. The official language of Pensamiento Psicológico is Spanish; however articles are also published in English and Portuguese. Titles of work in the reference list should not be translated, nor should names of institutions, unless there is an official translation.


  • Texts should not exceed 30 pages, including tables, figures and references.
  • These should be presented in double spacing in a Word document, using a Times Roman 11pt font.
  • Margins should be 1" (2,4 cm).
  • Manuscripts which do not comply with the aforementioned specifications will not be accepted.

TITLE PAGE. This should contain:

  • The title of the article, consisting of between 10 and 15 pages.
  • A brief title suggested for the headings of the internal pages of the journal, and relevant to the article.
  • The complete names of authors with their respective institutional affiliation, academic titles, postal address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address. To protect the anonymity of scientific mediation, this information should not appear anywhere within the text. Only the names of those who have taken part directly in the research or preparation of the manuscript should appear as authors. The inclusion of other individuals as authors will be seen as unethical.
  • A maximum of six individual authors for each article.
  • The name of the author responsible for correspondence and his or her e-mail address.
  • A footnote to the title of the article stating the name of the research project originating the manuscript, together with its corresponding institutional registration (if there is one).

ABSTRACT. The abstract should contain a maximum of 250 words. It must be in Spanish and English and be organized as follows: a) Objectives, b) Methods, c) Results and, d) Conclusions. Case reports must be accompanied by a nonstructured summary with a maximum of 200 words.

KEY WORDS. The abstract should be accompanied by a maximum of six key words in Spanish and English. The words to be used are those accepted by international data bases, which may be consulted at the following web sites:

BODY OF THE ARTICLE. Empirical or theoretical research articles must be categorized according to the IMRAD format: introduction, methods, results and discussion. Short articles will present preliminary or partial results. Case reports usually require other titles and subtitles according to their content, but it is recommended to keep to this sequence in the text.

ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS. The manuscript must include an explanation of the procedure followed in the study to guarantee compliance with the ethical principles and norms of the Declaration of Helsinki of 1975, and its subsequent revisions. Furthermore, the articles are subject to the laws of the country in which the research was carried out and must include the name of the institution which gave the ethical guarantee and the registration number, if applicable. For studies carried out in Colombia, the ethical guidelines must be in line with Resolution 8430 of 1993 of the Ministry of Health.

TABLE. They must appear in a form which is understandable for the reader, and complement, not repeat, the results presented in the body of the text. Each table will have a brief title above it, and will indicate the place, date and source of the information. They must be consecutively numbered, and appear at the end of the article after the REFERENCE section.

They must be in black and white in the program used to produce them (that is, Excel, Power Point, or any other commonly used software) or provide the file in "eps" format (encapsulated postscript) for editing purposes.

  • Manuscripts must contain a maximum of four tables and/or figures.

  • Authors must prepare their texts on OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect, and use programs such as Excel or Power Point to create the figures.
  • Manuscripts must be sent via the on-line system, available on the journal's web site. Authors who are sending their articles to Pensamiento Psicológico for the first time should register as new authors through this system. Once registered, they may send their articles, following the corresponding instructions.
  • The manuscript must be accompanied by a COVER LETTER sent to NATALIA CADAVID RUIZ, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal Pensamiento Psicológico, in which the authors certify that:

- All the authors are in agreement with the content, organization, and the way in which the manuscript is presented.
- The manuscript is original an unedited, which is to say that it has not been wholly or partially published before (either in printed or electronic form), in the same or any other language.
- The manuscript has not been sent, nor will be sent for publication to any other local or international journal, while in the review process and a decision taken by the Editorial Committee of Pensamiento Psicológico.
- Statements concerning conflicts of interest.
- The cover letter may be copied once it has entered the on-line system.

The editorial team will acknowledge receipt of your manuscript and will inform you of the identification code assigned to you for subsequent communication.

All correspondence between the editorial team and the authors will be by e-mail. Printed copies of manuscripts are not required.


When sending their articles to Pensamiento Psicológico, the author(s) accept that for the benefit of publication their rights will be transferred to the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Cali for circulation of the journal in printed or electronic format.

It is understood that the opinions and appreciations expressed by the authors in their articles are made under their sole responsibility, and do not compromise in any way the opinion or scientific policy of Pensamiento Psicológico or of the University.
