Scope and policy

REVISTA COLOMBIANA DE CIENCIAS PECUARIAS
INSTRUCTION FOR AUTHORS

The Colombian Journal of Livestock Sciences (Revista Colombiana de Ciencias Pecuarias) is a publication devoted to the disclosure of scientific information related to Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnical matters, as well as to related aspects of these two disciplines, from professional and union perspectives. It is directed mainly to Veterinary Doctors, Zootechnical Specialists, and professionals of the agrarian areas and the scientific community.

The Colombian Journal of Livestock Sciences (Revista Colombiana de Ciencias Pecuarias) was founded in 1978 by the School of Veterinary and Zootechny of Antioquia (COLVEZA). In the past the “Revista Colveza” and the “Boletín Científico” were published. At present, and since 1999, our Journal is a publication of the Faculty of Agrarian Sciences of the University of Antioquia (Universidad de Antioquia).

Our Journal has the following sections:

1. Original Articles, which includes scientific and technological information that is the result of original research.
2. Review Articles, with critical revisions of the advances and tendencies of a particular theme.
3. Selections, which comprises essays, projects (perspectives) of research, summaries of scholarly thesis, summaries of research work or research thesis (undergraduate, specialization, Master of Science or PhD), seminar synthesis, conferences, Journal clubs and presentations.
4. Clinical cases, presents and discusses a concrete case, new, well documented, and of a highly academic value.
5. News/ Points of view, related to scientific updates, academic and scientific events, Union policy, curriculum notes, historical facts; letters to the editor, opinion and commentary, bibliographical references and portraits.

Form and preparation of manuscripts

Submission of the manuscripts:

Work that is sent in has to be unpublished and the author(s) must acknowledge that the contents have not been nor will be sent for publication in another Journal, while the evaluation process is taking place. For this effect the authors must fill in the form “Agreement of the authors of the article” that is found at the end of each number of our Journal. This is a mandatory requirement to receive, consider and evaluate new material. The work has to be in either Spanish o English. The manuscript must be typed in bond type of paper (8,5 x 11,5’), with double spacing, in Arial type of letter at size 12 (characters per inch). All pages must be numbered and the number should appear in the upper right hand corner. Every scientific or academic concept must have a quote that indicates to the reader that she/he should consult the end of the work for the complete reference. This will be done, indicating between parentheses the corresponding number in the end notes (without quoting authors nor date of publication in the parenthesis – these will only be included in the end note). In case you quote other authors whose results coincide or contrast to those presented in your paper, the last name of both the first and the second author must be used, or if there are more than two authors, the last name of the first will be employed plus the expression “et al”. In both cases the number of the corresponding reference must be quoted in parenthesis.
And also, there should be no more than three references to support concepts. Manuscripts must be sent in original printing and a copy, and an electronic copy in a recordable 3½ floppy disk, (all in Word format), to the Director de la Revista Colombiana de Ciencias Pecuarias, Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias, Carrera 75 No. 65-87, Ciudadela de Robledo, Universidad de Antioquia, AA 1226, Medellín, Colombia.

The way to present the work depends on the section it belongs to, as described in the following explanation (and submitting also to the Vancouver rules).

Original articles:

1. Title. It must be centered, in boldface and should not exceed 25 words. Capital letters should be used only in an initial letter of a word or in a proper name. Scientific names will be written in italics, they must be capitalized in the initial letter of genera and have lower case letter in the initial of the species (e.g. Bos indicus, Escherichia coli, Brucella abortus).

2. Authors. First name, initial of the second name and last name, without any grammar sign between them, followed by the exponent number in italics that indicates the Institution each author pertains to, followed by comma and the academic titles in abbreviated form, separated by comma. Authors and their info must be separated by a semi-colon (e.g. Jorge E Ossa1, MV, PhD; Juan D Rodas2, MV, MS). Names must be centered.

3. Affiliation. Underneath the authors, centered, and starting with the same exponent number in italics that appears after each author (see numeral 2), must be written down the division and Institution to which the author belongs and her/his complete postal address, separating with semi-colon the different institutions (e.g. 1 Biogenesis program, y 2Virology Laboratory, Medicine Faculty, University of Antioquia, AA 1226, Medellín, Colombia; 3Medical Laboratory of the Americas, AA 5455, Medellín, Colombia). Underneath and centered, the e-mail of the main author.

4. Abstract. In italics and boldface. It has to clearly state the primary objective of the research, followed by a concise description of the materials and methods used the results and relevant conclusions, with a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 300.

5. Key words. This subtitle is in boldface and without italics, followed by a colon, then in lower case letters, in italics and without boldface, between three and six key words that give a general idea about the content of your work. The key words must be written in strict alphabetical order.

6. Introduction. This heading must be written in lower case letters and in boldface. Provide information on the actual state of knowledge regarding the specific topic of the work and then provide the reasons that justify the work.

7. Materials and methods. This title will be written in lower case letters and in boldface. Inform here about the materials and methods employed. Those methods that are original or standardized by the authors must be described with due precision so that any other researcher can repeat the experiment. If the method has been described by other authors, do not include details but make the proper reference to the source where they exist. When dealing with methods that are already described and are modified by the authors, besides the due reference, include a detailed description of the modification. In case subtitles are needed this is how you must include them: the subtitles of primary importance will be written in italics and without boldface, in the line following the description of the procedure; if there is a subtitle of secondary importance, it will be written in italics as well and without boldface, with a period. The description will be made immediately after the period.

Horizontal enumerations will be done in the following way: first a number and then parenthesis followed by the word in lower case letter, separated by a comma. Vertical enumerations will be done with the number, followed by a period and the initial of the in capital letter. Number citation will be done in letter from “one” (a) to “nine” (i), except when one value is accompanied by a weight measure. The units of measure will be cited according to the metric system and a space must be left between the number and the unit (the latter will not be employed in their plural form and will not carry a period afterwards. The percentage (%) and pesos ($) symbols will always come together with the amount. When a unit of measure, interval, or range is the same for several numbers, it will only accompany the last number. In numbers that go beyond four digits, the units and the decimals will be separated by a period. Abbreviations or initials in another language must be quoted in the original language, with their international name in parenthesis (e.g. Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF)); after its first appearance only the international name will be quoted. All the reagents as well as the equipment used must include in a parenthesis the house that constructs them and the main city of its offices (e.g. Sigma, St Louis MO). Commercial names must not be included in the text, and reference must always be made to the main active; in case it is strictly necessary, the commercial name must be quoted in a footnote.

Statistical analysis must clearly indicate the procedure that was employed, the transformation that the data have been subject to enable the analysis, the statistical models and the level of significance employed.

8. Results. Describe the results obtained express them as occurring in the past. Be very careful to state their statistical relevance to emphasize both the differences (p<0.05; or p<0.01) as well as the likenesses (p>0.05) between data. Levels of significance inferior to the 99.9% of reliability will be quoted as (p<0.01). The tables and figures must be presented in a strict order that follows the order of appearance of results. The same rules for titles and subtitles apply as those which were established in “Materials and methods”.

9. Discussion. This section is independent of the Results section. The authors will comment specifically on the results, comparing these data with others from related researches, and will try to offer an interpretation of them to, finally, provide recommendations and hypothesis. Leave out reference to themes or hypothesis that do not have a strict bearing on your results and the central theme of your work.

10. Acknowledgements. Authors can mention institutions that have financed their work dependencies or institutions that have supported its execution, people and collaborators. Specify the codes of projects (Grants) that financed the work.

11. Summary. Title and abstract in English, in italics and boldface.

12. Key words. The clue words in English, considering what was indicated in numeral 5.

13. References. References will be written in their original language in strict alphabetical order and the citations will be made in Arabic numerals in parenthesis.
