Abstract This article reconstructs the history of the Visual Design Program at the Universidad de Caldas (1991-2023) through the creation of a transmedia living archive. Using a qualitative approach, the study integrates documentary analysis including curricula, minutes, and institutional reports, as well as semi-structured interviews with faculty and alumni, and a survey of current students. The findings reveal gaps and biases in the institutional archive-such as unrecorded internal debates, contributions by adjunct faculty, and peripheral spatial memories. Furthermore, they demonstrate how transmedia storytelling expands institutional memory by integrating testimonies, images, and digital resources. Moreover, source triangulation and member checking strengthened the study's credibility, while community participation enabled a democratization of curatorial practices related to the past. Consequently, the article proposes an expanding transmedia ecosystem-comprising a central documentary, a timeline, infographics, and a collaborative database-that transforms archival constraints into narrative opportunities. Ultimately, this work offers a replicable model for managing university memories with academic rigor, inclusivity, and public activation.
Abstract This article analyzes the methodological challenges and the tensions between history, memory, and archives in the study of Barrio Abajo, an area currently recognized as a Cultural Heritage Asset of the District of Barranquilla. Specifically, it argues that its modern settlement was a response to the city's demographic and economic growth in the second half of the nineteenth century, becoming consolidated as a residential area for workers from the Customs House and the Montoya Station. From its origins, the neighborhood combined residential, commercial, and industrial functions. During the twentieth century, it emerged as a transitional space between the industrial zone and the northern part of the city, preserving its popular character while becoming the target of multiple-yet unsuccessful-urban renewal projects. Methodologically, the research is based on documentary sources from national and local archives, digital repositories, and group interviews conducted in 2024 with residents of the neighborhood.
Abstract The aim of this article is to demonstrate the possibilities of socio-economic research within the documents of the Archivo Histórico del Magdalena Grande in Santa Marta, considering the availability of the files and their correlation with the historical memory of the city. To this end, an analysis is presented of the manumission boards throughout the nineteenth century, during the inception and development of the republican period, taking as a central theme the socio-economic dynamics in relation to the processes of freedom in the province of Santa Marta. It is hoped that the results of this research will serve as an input for future studies, working with the documents that rest in this understudied archive.
Abstract This paper examines the Fondo Fabiola Lalinde y Familia (FFLF), preserved at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia (Medellín) as an emblematic personal archive that bears witness to a mother's sustained struggle to clarify the enforced disappearance of her son. Through the study of documents and everyday objects -such as Fabiola Lalinde's notebooks and the artifacts gathered in the so-called "Caja Luis Fernando"- the paper explores how these materials contribute to reconstructing the identities of victims, restoring their humanity and dignity, and re-inscribing their stories into collective memory. Moreover, the analysis highlights the significance of personal archives not only as essential documentary sources for the recognition of individuals and communities affected by violence, but also as fundamental tools in processes of justice and symbolic reparation.
Abstract This paper presents the experiences and progress of an applied research project aimed at highlighting the documentary heritage preserved in Chilean archives through an interdisciplinary initiative. Specifically, the study focuses on the work conducted around the Fondo Cartas del Salitre, stored in the Archivo Regional de Tarapacá (Chile). The emphasis lies in demonstrating how the integration of various disciplines-namely history, paleography, and linguistics- can be useful for the study of heritage documentary sources. Thus, we address the paleographic challenges of reading these documents and how they influence the correct interpretation of linguistic aspects, which are linked to the historical context of production. In this regard, some linguistic components are highlighted to illustrate how certain socio-cultural factors can be represented in epistolary writing.
Abstract The article reviews the importance and cultural influence exerted by the musical styles of salsa and rap in the construction of neighborhood identities among the marginal population of the district of Aguablanca in Cali (Colombia), between 1980 and 2000. In this sense, primary and secondary sources were collected about the characteristics of the birth of this sector and the community sense that prevailed in its construction. The study relates this human structural evolution to the origin of urban musical genres of great popularity-specifically salsa and rap-since their arrival in Cali and the district of Aguablanca. Furthermore, it is emphasized that both musical styles, owing to their Afro-descendant and popular historical roots, above all, to the message and content of their lyrics, were integrated into the daily dynamics of the people of Aguablanca and contributed to forging new group cultural identities and social identification.
Abstract In this article, we address the French history and heritage of fin-de-siècle Panamanian military music, particularly drum calls, with an emphasis on the case of the diane or reveille call. We explore the history of the diane within the context of French batteries d'ordonnance and their transmission to Colombia and the Isthmus during the nineteenth century. Likewise, we analyze the ways in which military calls are mapped onto Panamanian independence celebrations through a process of adoption/adaptation and the social repercussions of this process over the following centuries. Consequently, the French diane is transformed by cultural agents of the Isthmus into a vessel for the construction of identities through the preservation of memory, the reinterpretation and resignification of cultural artifacts, as well as inclusion and social cohesion. The Panamanian diana thus emerges from this complex cultural process as a platform for permanent cultural dialogue. Julián David Granados Sanabria Anarquistas sobre el río Magdalena.
