Abstract This article presents a historical-hermeneutic action research study conducted with a population of 377 educational stakeholders, i.e., teachers, families, students, administrative staff from District Educational Institutions, and officials involved in public education policy in Bogotá. The objective was to gather and analyze the voices of the educational community regarding the barriers faced by students with disabilities in terms of access, retention, and progression within the system. A process was carried out to identify key elements aimed at recognizing the barriers encountered by children and youth with disabilities throughout their educational trajectories, based on the experiences of each stakeholder. For data collection, semi-structured surveys, direct interviews, and focus groups were used, allowing for the triangulation of perceptions and the construction of a clear, contextualized overview of inclusive education in the city. The results confirm our research question regarding the multiple barriers to the effective implementation of inclusive education in Colombia, despite regulatory advances—specifically for Colombia, Decree 1421 of 2017 and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which seek to regulate the provision of educational services to persons with disabilities under an inclusive education approach. The analysis yields a central conclusion: attitudinal barriers emerge as a cross-cutting axis that intensifies all other barriers, highlighting the urgency of strengthening the shared responsibility of all educational stakeholders in order to ensure dignified and effective educational trajectories for students with disabilities.
Abstract This study analyzes the conceptions and practices of rural teachers in Chile's Araucanía region regarding intercultural geography education in diverse school contexts. Through a qualitative approach and a multiple case design, we collected the experiences of 15 teachers from schools with an intercultural and environmental focus. The results reveal an expanded understanding of geography as a formative discipline that is linked to territory, identity, and local knowledge. Likewise, teachers show an orientation towards critical interculturality, understood as the recognition and articulation of diverse cultures and epistemologies. Significant efforts have been made to integrate the intercultural approach into the curriculum through contextualized pedagogical practices and the recovery of the Mapuche language and worldview. However, tensions persist with the national curriculum, the scarce training in interculturality, and institutional limitations. This research concludes that, although rural teachers are willing to move towards an intercultural approach to geography education, a structural transformation of the education system is needed to legitimize territorial knowledge, strengthen intercultural teacher training, and promote education policies that are consistent with the cultural diversity of the territories.
Abstract Mental health in the child population has become an issue of global and local relevance, as evidenced by rising rates of emotional disorders from early childhood. Within this framework, the family emerges as a fundamental agent in emotional development. This study aims to analyze the impact of parents’ emotional background on the socioemotional development of their children. A descriptive qualitative study was conducted in a district educational institution in Bogotá, Colombia, involving 15 families through group semi-structured interviews with parents and observations of the children based on the qualitative child development assessment scale (EVCDI-R). The results indicate that emotional patterns can be transmitted from one generation to another, influencing how children manage their emotions and establish social interaction. In several cases, fathers and mothers unconsciously replicate the parenting strategies acquired during their own childhood, although some manage to break negative cycles by adopting more emotionally healthy parenting practices. Children who develop in emotionally positive family contexts show improvement in their socioemotional skills, whereas contexts with limited emotional communication or dysfunctional affective patterns correlate with an increase in socioemotional problems during childhood. In conclusion, this study corroborates the significant influence of the family’s emotional environment on socioemotional well-being, emphasizing the need to promote parental education programs that help in the construction of healthy family environments.
Abstract In this article, the perceptions of teachers and students regarding the use of Big Data were analyzed in a case study conducted in two upper-secondary educational institutions in the municipality of Itagüí, Colombia. This municipality was selected because it constitutes a typical example of an intermediate Colombian city, with demographic and socioeconomic characteristics that can be extrapolated to 35% of the country’s urban centers. Through semi-structured interviews and surveys administered to 150 participants, we identified opportunities and challenges associated with the implementation of data-driven models, with the aim of improving educational quality and reducing digital divides in middle-development contexts. Using a correlational analysis, a high level of consistency was found in the responses (r=0.8, p<0.001) regarding the personalization of learning, the improvement of academic quality, and educational equity. The findings reveal patterns of teacher technology adoption that are replicable in other cities within the Colombian educational system, such as Bogotá and Medellín. Denied Interculturality and Gender Inequality.
Abstract The findings of this study focus on the Nueva Escuela Mexicana (NEM) and teaching practices in relation to the axes of critical interculturality and gender in an afternoon primary school serving working children from Indigenous communities, whose native languages are Tseltal and Tsotsil, in the city of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas. From a sociocultural perspective, and through participant observation and interviews, teaching practices were analyzed within the complexity of everyday school life. An intersectional analysis revealed the system of structural race-gender-class oppressions that converges on the lives of Indigenous students, who are denied and rendered invisible in everyday school settings. Generating knowledge about everyday school practices in relation to critical interculturality and gender equality made it possible to highlight subjectivities and teaching experiences that preserve and reproduce the race-gender-class system. The absence and inability of the Mexican state to transform the conditions of structural inequality affecting Indigenous children, and to provide support through both initial and ongoing teacher education, prevents the reversal of gendered and intercultural forms of oppression and domination, which constitute a cross-cutting axis in the NEM’s curricular proposal.
Abstract This article analyzes the conditions of the home environment during early childhood in Neiva, Colombia, in response to the need for contextualized evidence on caregiving practices, access to services, and the structural factors that shape early childhood environments within the framework of national policies such as the De Cero a Siempre strategy. The objective was to characterize home environment conditions in early childhood in Neiva and identify associations between sociodemographic variables and practices related to caregiving, health, early education, recreation, and child participation. A structured questionnaire was administered to 700 households with children aged 0-6 years, selected through probabilistic stratified sampling by district. The analysis combined descriptive statistics, Phi correlation coefficients, and multiple correspondence analysis. The findings reveal significant associations between child age, caregiver education level, and participation in prenatal courses with positive caregiving practices, access to early education, and improved recreational conditions. Consistent patterns were also identified among indicators of health, sanitation, nutrition, and developmental follow-up. These results highlight the family environment as a structuring space for early well-being and underscore the importance of strengthening public policies that recognize territorial and cultural diversity in early childhood.
Abstract This article presents a systematic review of academic literature that examines how intercultural education in relation to migrant children and youth in primary and secondary education contexts has been researched over the last decade. Using a structured search strategy based on PRISMA criteria, 100 documents were identified in international academic databases, out of which 55 met the inclusion criteria: 50 journal articles and five doctoral dissertations. The analysis made possible to identify diverse ways of problematizing migration, cultural difference, and the school experience, as well as recurring trends in the approaches, objectives, and theoretical frameworks employed. The findings reveal three central tensions: the persistence of assimilationist practices despite official discourses of interculturality, the systematic gap between educational policies and their effective implementation, and the emergence of forms of agency and cultural resistance among migrant students. It was also identified that educational experiences are deeply mediated by processes of racialization based on national origin, and that curricula operate as homogenizing devices which contribute to make the knowledge of this population invisible. This review seeks to provide a critical synthesis to guide future research and educational practices committed to a situated understanding of migratory experiences, the recognition of difference, and the guarantee of children and youth rights when facing human mobility. Reforming the Superior Normal Schools? Yes, but not This Way: A Critical Analysis of Law 2481 of 2025 http://www.scielo.org.co/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S2357-62862026000200009&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en Resumen Este artículo analiza críticamente la Ley 2481 de 2025, que regula a las escuelas normales superiores (ENS) en Colombia, examinando sus implicaciones normativas, conceptuales y sociopolíticas.
Abstract This article critically analyzes Law 2481 of 2025, which regulates Superior Normal Schools (SNS) in Colombia, examining its normative, conceptual, and sociopolitical implications. Historically, ENS have been pillars of teacher education, especially in rural areas, but their legal status has remained ambiguous. Therefore, this article seeks to identify how the discursive shifts introduced by the aforementioned law generate normative, conceptual, and sociopolitical implications that perpetuate tensions and fragment the Colombian education system. To this effect, critical discourse analysis is employed, articulating three levels (text, discursive practice, and sociocultural practice) to identify the relationships between normative language and power structures. The reading and analysis show that this law does not recognize SNS as higher education institutions, which limits their autonomy and capacity for innovation, introduces a teacher education scheme that accentuates the disarticulation between initial training and career progression, and risks generating an oversupply of teachers without addressing the unequal distribution of the teaching staff. Based on the evidence, it is concluded that the reform, in its current form, reinforces a market-oriented logic and maintains institutional fragmentation. Accordingly, we recommend reviewing the teacher evaluation system, rethinking professional trajectories, promoting partnerships between SNS and universities with contextualized curricula, and moving towards the full recognition of SNS as higher education institutions with sufficient funding.
Abstract Within the framework of critical language pedagogy, the postmethod, and decoloniality, this reflection article argues for shifting language teaching and learning in Colombia from traditional to emerging didactics. This transition addresses the shortcomings of homogeneous, decontextualized approaches that reproduce linguistic and cultural hierarchies, limiting situated and transformative education. Six emerging didactics are proposed: (i) intercultural and community-based teaching, integrating local knowledge and voices; (ii) pedagogical translanguaging, leveraging learners’ full linguistic repertoires; (iii) participatory language planning and policy, involving communities in language management; (iv) service-learning in languages, linking learning with social action; (v) critical digital didactics, using technologies ethically and reflectively; and (vi) multimodal and multiliteracy teaching, combining diverse semiotic resources. Together, these didactics offer an urgent and feasible pathway towards a more inclusive, contextualized, and transformative language education in Colombia.
