^les^aEl presente texto ofrece un recuento de ciertas trayectorias recorridas en nuestro país bajo el propósito de obtener la separación de los poderes públicos. En este sentido, partiendo de la dinámica institucional de los frenos y contrapesos, se analizan cuatro ámbitos del poder público en los que, a lo largo del siglo XX, fue perseguido este cometido, a saber (i) la rama legislativa (ii) la rama ejecutiva (iii) la rama judicial y (iv) los organismos de control.^len^aThis article advances an account of certain itineraries experienced in the Colombian setting regarding the efforts in achieving the separation of public powers. Taking the element of check and balances as a point of reference, four institutional spheres are analized regarding the goal of having separate powers along the twentieth century, i.e. (i) the legislative branch (ii) the executive branch (iii) the judicial branch, and (iv) the supervising public entities.
