^les^aEn este artículo se analiza el deterioro ambiental generado sobre los recursos forestales, como consecuencia de las innovaciones técnicas introducidas en las formas de iluminación urbana a mediados del siglo xix. Muestra cómo hacia los años cincuenta se sustituyó la manteca, aceites y sebos que se quemaban para generar el alumbrado público de las ciudades mexicanas de Puebla y Tlaxcala, por el uso creciente del aguarrás obtenido a partir de la destilación de la resina natural o trementina secretada por algunas especies arbóreas. Este cambio impactó lesivamente los bosques del volcán La Malintzi, que domina imponente a estas dos ciudades.^len^aThis article analyzes the environmental deterioration of forest resources resulting from the introduction of technical innovations in street lighting in the mid-19th century. It shows how, in the 1850s, the growing use of turpentine, obtained by distilling the natural resin secreted by some tree species, replaced the burning of animal fats and oils in street lamps. This change had a damaging impact on the forests of the volcano La Malintzi, which towers above the two cities.
