^les^aEsta investigación se concentra en una parte desconocida del funcionamiento de la justicia colonial, tanto para la historiografía del derecho como para la historia social. El punto de partida es cuestionar la imagen del verdugo que ha perdurado en el tiempo y analizarla como una construcción política desplegada por un grupo social determinado. En el trabajo se revisan los cambios que se dieron a la luz de las reformas borbónicas, en torno al ejecutor a fines del siglo XVIII en el entonces reino de Chile. También se analizan las modificaciones que en el aspecto material debió enfrentar, específicamente en el ámbito salarial. El objetivo específico es demostrar que la infamia vinculada al cargo puede matizarse y debe entenderse como parte de las argumentaciones de las autoridades coloniales, reforzadas por escritores e historiadores del siglo XIX.^len^aThis study focuses on an unknown part of the operation of colonial justice for both the historiography of the law and social history. It starts by questioning the image of the executioner that has persisted over time and analyzing it as a political construction deployed by a specific social group. The article examines the changes to the position of the executioner under the Bourbon reforms at the end of the eighteenth century in what was then the Kingdom of Chile. It also analyzes the material changes that the executioner faced, particularly regarding wages. The goal of the article is to demonstrate that the infamy tied to the post, which emerged from the arguments of colonial authorities and reinforced by nineteenth-century writers and historians, needs to be understood with greater nuance.
