^les^aEn este artículo se propone una lectura iconográfica (interpretación) de la fgura del héroe nacional costarricense Juan Santamaría, tomando dos tipos de representaciones visuales como ejemplo. Ellas son: la estatua en bronce al soldado Juan Santamaría, diseñada por el escultor francés Aristide Onésime Croisy (1840-1899), y la pintura al óleo titulada: La Quema del Mesón, del artista costarricense Enrique Echandi Montero (1866-1959).^len^aThis article presents an iconographic reading (interpretation) of Costa Rica's national hero, Juan Santamaría. It examines two types of visual representation: the bronze statue of Juan Santamaría as a soldier, designed by the French sculptor, Aristide Onésime Croisy (1840-1899); and the oil painting, La Quema del Mesón, by the Costa Rican artist, Enrique Echandi Montero (1866-1959).
