^les^aLa historiografía contemporánea sobre la independencia viene priorizando el análisis de la cultura política, en el paso de las sociedades del antiguo régimen a la modernidad política decimonónica. Este renovado interés tiene en el análisis de la prensa, la configuración de los espacios públicos y las redes de comunicación como sus principales elementos de reflexión. La presente investigación analiza el discurso político de la élite y la imagen que ésta construyó sobre los sectores populares, tomando como principal fuente el diario El Investigador [del Perú] (1813-1814). La lectura sistemática y el análisis de este periódico nos permite advertir el temor de la élite con respecto a los sectores populares, los conflictos entre Estado e Iglesia y los conflictos en el interior del aparato estatal entre la autoridad central y las autoridades inferiores, que reflejan el resquebrajamiento del orden virreinal.^len^aContemporary historiography on independence has prioritized the analysis of political culture in the passage from the societies of the Ancien Régime to nineteenth-century political modernity. This renewed interest focuses primarily on analyzing the press, the configuration of public spaces, and networks of communication. This article examines the political discourse of the elite and the image that they constructed of the popular sectors. It does so by using the daily Peruvian newspaper, El Investigador, between the years 1813 and 1814 as its main primary source. The systematic reading and analysis of this newspaper allows us to show the elite's fear regarding the popular sectors, the conflicts between Church and State, and the conflicts within the state apparatus over the degree to which authority should be centralized, all of which reflected the break down of the viceroyal order.
