^les^aen el presente articulo pretendemos dar cuenta, a partir de dos estudios de caso, de la forma cómo descendientes de esclavizados acceden a la tierra en un área de la gobernación de santa marta, la usan y se vinculan con su producción a mercados comarcanos a finales del período colonial. es decir, se convierten en campesinos libres. argumentamos que para la segunda mitad del siglo xviii se percibe de manera clara la conformación de economías campesinas en la mencionada gobernación, como también se señalan algunas particularidades históricas referentes a su conformación, la producción y los vínculos con el mercado.^len^aBased on two case studies, this article attempts to explain how the descendents of slaves acquired land, used it, and through their production became tied to local markets in an area of the Province of Santa Marta at the end of the colonial period. In other words, it examines how they became free peasants. We argue that, by the second half of the eighteenth century, the emergence of peasant economies in the Province is clearly discernable. We also indicate some historical particularities regarding the emergence, productive activity, and market ties of this peasantry.
