^les^aEn este artículo, a partir de una mirada cualitativa, se relaciona la ocurrencia de desastres asociados a deslizamientos e inundaciones en Medellín con características del proceso de crecimiento urbano, como la doble marginalidad y la transformación intensiva de la naturaleza. Con ello se identifica la construcción social del riesgo, proceso que define la naturaleza social de los desastres, aportando elementos para cuestionar el supuesto carácter natural de los mismos.^len^aThis article qualitatively links the disasters associated with landslides and flooding in Medellin with characteristics of the process of urban growth, such as double marginality and the intensive transformation of nature. It identifies the social construction of risk, a process that defines the social nature of disasters, thus suggesting ways to question the supposed natural character of such disasters.
