^les^aEste artículo tiene por objetivo analizar las representaciones que elaboraron las autoridades del Reino de Chile sobre el territorio de la frontera mapuche. La investigación se realizó a partir de cuatro proyectos de expansión territorial promovidos durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII. Los hallazgos de este estudio indican que los proyectistas idearon estrategias pacíficas para integrar esta frontera al Reino de Chile, con el fin de articular este espacio en términos defensivos-estratégicos e incorporarlo a la cultura y economía coloniales. El diseño de estos proyectos estuvo a cargo de intelectuales que adaptaron principios ilustrados para resolver el problema fronterizo, creando nuevas representaciones sobre este espacio que resaltaron su importancia dentro del sistema territorial colonial español.^len^aThe objective of this article is to analyze the representations elaborated by the authorities of the Kingdom of Chile regarding the territory of the Mapuche frontier. The research was done on the basis of four projects of territorial expansion promoted during the second half of the 18th century. The findings of this study indicate that those who planned these projects devised peaceful strategies for integrating said frontier into the Kingdom of Chile, in order to articulate said space in defensive-strategic terms and incorporate it into the colonial culture and economy. The projects were designed by intellectuals who adapted the principles of the Enlightenment to resolve the problem of the frontier, thus creating new representations regarding this space that emphasized its importance within the Spanish colonial territorial system.^lpt^aEste artigo tem por objetivo analisar as representações que as autoridades do Reino do Chile elaboraram sobre o território da fronteira mapuche. Esta pesquisa foi realizada a partir de quatro projetos de expansão territorial promovidos durante a segunda metade do século XVIII. As constatações deste estudo indicam que os projetistas idealizaram estratégias pacíficas para integrar essa fronteira ao Reino do Chile a fim de articular esse espaço em termos defensivos-estratégicos e incorporá-lo à cultura e à economia coloniais. O desenho desses projetos esteve a cargo de intelectuais que adotaram princípios ilustrados para resolver o problema fronteiriço criando novas representações sobre esse espaço que ressaltaram sua importância dentro do sistema territorial colonial espanhol.
