The article examines the role played by the planting of sugar cane and distillation of spirits for the economy of the severeing State of Bolívar. It argues that unlike tobacco and cotton, sugar cane, through trade of spirits, consolidated a domestic market and encouraged the trade between the Provinces and regions of the State. The foregoing led to the State established the tax on the distillation and sale of spirits, becoming one of the taxes mora significant for the support of public administration, after taxes to the disgorging and on income.
