^les^aA fin de poner de relieve el papel de la literatura, la gramática, la retórica y la etimología, como instrumentos para comprender las instituciones del derecho público de Roma -ciudad que pasó de ser simple ciudad-estado a imperio que abarcó gran parte de Europa, Asia y África-, y como punto de partida para proponer a partir de ellas nuevas categorías políticas que sirvan para el presente, el autor centra su atención en el texto de las Noches Aticas, obra en la que Aulo Gélio, se refiere a los comicios, la ley, los plebiscitos, la designación de las Vestales, la provocatio ad populum y la primacía del interés general.^len^aThis paper emphazises the role of literature, grammar, rhetoric and etymology, as tools to understand the institutions of roman public law -Rome, the city that from a single city-state became an empire that extended all over Europe, and part of Asia and Africa-, and also as the starting point to propose new political categories that serve to interpretate much better present institutions. The author focuses on the text of the Attic Nights of Aulus Gellius, in which refers to the comitia, laws, plebiscites, the designation of the Vestals, the provocatio ad populum, and the primacy of the general interest.
