Abstract

LEGE, Philippe. Socialism and Utilitarism in the Political Economy of John Stuart Mill. Lect. Econ. [online]. 2006, n.64, pp.167-185. ISSN 0120-2596.

This article points to the relationship between socialism and utilitarianism in John Stuart Mill' s though. His praise of cooperatives relies on the utilitarian criterion "the greatest good for the greatest number" and on the idea of a progressive diffusion of the cooperative system. On the contrary, Mill upholds the competition system; thus setting himself apart from most of the socialist authors of his era.

Keywords : Mill; socialism; utilitarianism; competition.
