Abstract

TEMPORELLI, Karina  and  VIEGO, Valentina. An Analysis of the Relationship Between Income and Life Expectancy for Latin America and the Caribbean. Lect. Econ. [online]. 2011, n.74, pp.61-85. ISSN 0120-2596.

This paper aims to determine the incidence of general living conditions on average longevity for Latin America and Caribbean countries during the period 1970-2005, based on panel data econometrics. The results suggest a positive but decreasing effect of income on life expectancy and a positive impact of workers' education on the population's average longevity. These findings indicate that to induce a permanent increase in life expectancy resources assigned to the health care system should be complemented with improvements in social infrastructure and habitat.

Keywords : life expectancy; living conditions; health; income.
