Abstract

ESPEJO-OLAYA, María Bernarda. ALLOPHONY FOR /S/ IN COLOMBIA. Linguist.lit. [online]. 2016, n.69, pp.79-97. ISSN 0120-5587.  https://doi.org/10.17533/udea.lyl.n69a04.

This paper shows the variations of /s/ through the Colombian territory. Since /s/ is today one of the most subject-to-change phonemes, we present data that evince clearly the phonetic differentiation among some of the country's regions, where /s/ emerges in all its realisation varieties and account for ongoing processes concerning this phoneme in Colombian Spanish. Our goal is to describe the degrees of allophony for /s/ recorded in Colombia, according mainly to the works by Cuervo (1954), Flórez (1951, 1973) and Montes Giraldo (1992, 1998). Additionally, recent work of some areas of the country, such as Rodríguez (2008) and Valencia (2015), are taken into account, in order to account for the variation in this segment at different times. We also discuss a few surveys from a corpus of speech in Bogotá and consider speech in the media and in both formal and informal communication situations.

Keywords : Spanish in Colombia; phoneme; allophony; dialect; speech..
