This article aims to study the social conditions which allowed the formation of a new reading public, the representations of this public, and the types of social control men of letters gathered in literary societies placed upon the public’s reading. To do so, this study analyzes documents of the time including literature, literary societies’ publication bodies and literary critiques. For this study, these documents are useful to understand the development of the social cultural process like the formation of a reading public from which it is possible to approach an expanded definition of literature for a society at a given time frame.

Keywords : Reading public; conditions of possibility; pernicious novels and authors in Colombia in the 19th century..
