Abstract

HABEKOST CARDOSO, Daniela et al. Care delivery in the terminality: difficulties of a multidisciplinary team in hospital care. av.enferm. [online]. 2013, vol.31, n.2, pp.83-91. ISSN 0121-4500.

This study aimed to know the difficulties faced by a multidisciplinary team during the care of terminal patients in an inpatient unit. It is a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study. The participants were six health professionals: a nurse, a nutritionist, a psychologist, a social worker, one physiotherapist and a medical, who were part of a multidisciplinary team at a clinical inpatient unit of a university hospital in southern Brazil. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions. It has emerged three thematic units after analyzing the data: difficulties of health professionals facing life terminality; the relationship of the multidisciplinary team with the family inside the terminality context and the limitations of the multidisciplinary team facing life terminality at work. Thus, it is considered that health professionals find it difficult to experience the care of terminal patients, especially in relation to the acceptance of death, as well as conflicts with family and even with colleagues from the team work. As all of this leads to suffering, it is highlighted the need for a formal space to health workers for reflection and discussion about death and dying.
