Abstract

Context:

The process of digitizing wood samples for identification and study has become increasingly relevant over the past decade, which is why it is necessary to consider photographic aspects that generate representation of the images with respect to the physical sample.

Method:

Ten timber species were used with no less than ten sampled trees. From each individual, five wooden cubes with a 10 mm edge were extracted and photographed with a stereoscope at 20x magnification under four luminosity protocols. During the process, variations in color (under the coordinates L*, a*, and b*), color differential (E*), and chroma (C*) were evaluated in addition to the density and diameter of the vessels.

Results:

The results showed that a 50 % brightness showed the greatest similarity to the colorimetry of the wood, obtaining E* values of less than 6 in all species, as well as C* values within the optimal range of 5 to 7. Regarding the anatomy of the individuals, the same behavior was observed in the ten species; it was found that the luminosity treatments at 25 and 50 % showed no significant differences, while the luminosities of 75 and 100 % tended to underestimate the values.

Conclusions:

The treatment with 25 % luminosity is ineffective due to the darkening of the surface, while exposures of 75 and 100 % tended to clarify the surface and underestimate anatomical characteristics.
