Abstract

ECHEVERRY PEREZ, Antonio José. The path of intolerance. Approach to extirpate idolatry in the New World in the sixteenth and seventeenth. Hist. Caribe [online]. 2012, vol.7, n.21, pp.55-74. ISSN 0122-8803.

The extirpation of idolatry, preferential option by the franciscan order in the New World, must be viewed within the context of a century marked by intolerance, in which the franciscan order wasn't a foreigner. Doing a major tracking of the main franciscan chroniclers and confronting their writings with existing documents in the General Archive of the Indies, this paper aims to show a different way, the mentality of these religious mendicants engaged in a process of evangelization of the continent.
