Abstract

VACCA-GAMEZ, Hermes Ariel; LEON-NEIRA, María Patricia  and  RUIZ-VALENCIA, Daniel Mauricio. Evaluation of the Rolling Thin Film Oven Aging of the 80-100 Asphalt Cement in the Static and Dynamic Behavior of Asphalt Mixtures. Ing. Univ. [online]. 2012, vol.16, n.2, pp.379-396. ISSN 0123-2126.

In this article we present the results of laboratory tests to evaluate the effect of the aged asphalt (short term) on the static and dynamic performance of asphalt mixtures type MDC-2. This aging is the one that occurs during the processes of production and construction of the asphalt mixture. The 80100 asphalt was aged by the Rolling Thin Film Oven test (RTFO); the specimens of asphalt mixtures were made to determine their mechanical properties with static and dynamic tests. Mixtures made with original and aged asphalt were tested. In agreement with the results of the tests, the static behavior of both mixtures (original and aged) is different. The stability of the mixture with aged asphalt had an increase of 18% compared with the increase in the original asphalt. The dynamic behaviour of the two mixtures was different for the dynamic axial modulus tests (differences of 10,5%) and for the indirect tension resilient modulus test (differences of 21%) for the same frequency and temperatura. In the test of permanent deformation of the asphalt mixture to repetitive axial loading the mixture made with aged asphalt had a lower permanent deformation (34%) compared with the original mixture. The results of the fatigue tests for both mixtures were similar.

Keywords : Aged asphalt (RTFO); asphalt mixtures; static and dynamic laboratory tests.
