Abstract

VELAZQUEZ ARGOTA, Juana Mercedes. EXCEPTIONAL SURVIVAL ANDSATISFACTORY LONGEVITY: AN APPROACH FROM THE BIOETHICS. rev.latinoam.bioet. [online]. 2009, vol.9, n.2, pp.86-91. ISSN 1657-4702.

The aging is defined like a dynamic, gradual, progressive and not revertible process, that always takes the seal of the singular, the unique thing, individual and the unique thing. The data offered by the Pan-American Organization of Health talk about " old-old" of the continent in the present and the next years, problematic fundamental in the organization of services, from the economic and health (medical expenses, pensions and others) points of view. This paper displays the socio-psychological factors considered of greater importance in the health, for the achieving of a satisfactory longevity. It is emphasized that within the geriatrical frame, the behavior of the morbidity by itself is not a sufficient indicator of the state of health of this population, considering that the main objective in the attendance to them, is not as much the increase of the life expectancy as the increase of an active life expectancy or free from disability, defined like all restriction or lack (resulting of a deficiency) of capacity to face an activity of the way or within the margins that are considered normal. The physical, mental and social disabilities, intimately related to the increase of the life expectancy, it enters the majors challenges to face in the present century and several of the challenges enumerate themselves that they must face the modern societies in relation to the prolongation of the life and the aging of the communities. Data of Cuban investigators talk about the centennial population of the country.
