Abstract

GRINAN MONTEALEGRE, María  and  PALAZON BOTELLA, María Dolores. Light Factories as architectural and urban models at risk in the region of Murcia (Spain). Apuntes [online]. 2013, vol.26, n.2, pp.90-101. ISSN 1657-9763.

The region of Murcia, located in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, boasts a large number of light factories, many of them built between the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. Although most surviving examples located in the course of the river Segura, regardless of location in the city or in the wild, are industrial buildings with common elements that follow traditional models of the architecture of the end of the nineteenth century, in some cases they incorporate unique elements worth mentioning, without forgetting the interest they have because of the fact that some of them retain their original machinery still in use today. With this article we aim to not only make architectural and heritage analysis, but affect the current status of these areas of industrial heritage, some of which are at risk and therefore we make concrete proposals for their enhancement.

Keywords : light factories; industrial heritage; cultural landscape; heritage management; tourism uses.
