Abstract

ABREU DA SILVEIRA, Marisa Rosâni. Understanding mathematics in the use of symbols and grammar. Rev. Guillermo Ockham [online]. 2017, vol.15, n.1, pp.51-57.  Epub June 16, 2021. ISSN 1794-192X.  https://doi.org/10.21500/22563202.3190.

This article aims to analyze the understanding of mathematics by the use of its symbols and rules of the grammar of its language. The meaning of the symbol is in its use and the meaning of the set of rules lies in the application of such rules in different contexts. Mathematical language is codified and follows rules that define mathematical concepts. The learning of mathematics depends on the practice of this language and the knowledge about the functioning of mathematical language can be found in the language games involving teacher and students. To that end, we will rely on Wittgenstein’s philosophy of language and some commentators on his philosophy.
