Abstract

ROLDAN, Diego. Justification, Production, Uses and Disputes over Green Spaces in Argentina. Parque de la Independencia in Rosario during the First Half of the Twentieth Century. Historelo.rev.hist.reg.local [online]. 2015, vol.7, n.13, pp.189-223. ISSN 2145-132X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/historelo.v7n13.44646.

This article analyzes the cultural justification, the material construction, and the social uses of the first large Park in Rosario. The hygienic and demographic arguments were the first legitimation of the Parque de la Independencia. The model of the Central Park (NY) and the discussion between Guillermo Rawson and D. F. Sarmiento on Palermo's Park in Buenos Aires affected their location and design. Subsequently, the occupation and concessions describe of the surface by the local corporations and associations are explained. Finally, the evidence about the social diffusion is explored observing the passage of an exclusive design, for the social distinction of the local elites, to a more pluralized public space. The study is based on survey and focused triangulation of the speeches of the press, the neighbors and Municipality.

Keywords : hygiene; grassroots; urban parks; uses; elites.
