Abstract

ESCOBAR-ORTIZ, Jorge. The Colombian Historical Novel and the Problem of Women in Science: The Case of the Viceroyalty of New Granada. Historelo.rev.hist.reg.local [online]. 2020, vol.12, n.25, pp.90-115. ISSN 2145-132X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/historelo.v12n25.83360.

This article investigates the images of science in the historical novels El nuevo reino (Estupiñán 2008) and La francesa de Santa Bárbara (Peláez 2009), as an approach to the relationship between women and science in Santafé de Bogotá in the Viceroyalty of New Granada in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The analysis draws on categories of literary theory and criticism, such as the category of the historical novel itself, but also on others from the history of science and the studies of science popularization. The question, addressed from the dichotomy between women of science and women in science, is whether these novels function as means to propagate the dominant narratives about the place of women in the history of neo-Granadine science or as critics of those same narratives.

Keywords : historical novel; history of science; Viceroyalty of New Granada; women of science; women in science; science popularization.
