Abstract

CASTANEDA-MORALES, Andrés  and  CUEVAS-ARENAS, Héctor. Between Educating and Perverting Customs: Beginnings of the Cinematographic Show in Valle del Cauca-Colombia (1910-1930). Cases of Cali and Buga. Historelo.rev.hist.reg.local [online]. 2021, vol.13, n.26, pp.105-133.  Epub Dec 11, 2020. ISSN 2145-132X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/historeio.v13n26.85447.

This article addresses the beginnings of the cinematographic show in the Valle del Cauca department (Colombia) from its foundation in 1910 to 1930. Its main objective is to show and analyze the discussions that arose among some sectors of the elites of Buga and Cali after the arrival of the cinema. To achieve this, an analysis is made of different primary sources, especially the press of the moment, as well as national and international bibliographic sources referring to the topic and context. Among the findings, it is evident, on the one hand, the positions of those who considered the new invention dangerous due to its perversion of customs and, on the other hand, the defense of the spectacle when considering it educator, civilizer and modernizer.

Keywords : modernization; history of cinema; public shows; Valle del Cauca; Colombia; twentieth century.
