The following article reconstructs the origins of the Guadua Working Group (1989-1999), attached to the Universidad Nacional de Colombia - Medellin's Campus, to historically inquiry the ideas and actions that recently configured the extension function of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. In an exercise of institutional microhistory, we performed a qualitative analysis of bibliography, legislation and interviews, with the purpose of identifying the manifestations and tensions that preceded the regulation of this university mission, where it is expressed, in a concrete way, the links of the university with the Colombian society; in this case, through the direct contributions towards agricultural and constructive development of the northwestern region of the country. This notion arose at the beginning of the 20th century, but its conceptualization at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia only became relevant in the nineties. Comparing these discourses with the activities of the Guadua Work Group, this research shows that academic networks in fact -invisible in the official stories about identity and university performance- have been the main social interlocutors of university knowledge, anticipating in their praxis, the slogans that at the end of the 20th century, pretended to redefine the National Colombian University in integrationist key.
