Abstract

DE GAINZA, MARIANA. THE PROBLEM OF THE INFINITE IN SPINOZA THE ART OF DISTINCTION. Ideas y Valores [online]. 2020, vol.69, n.174, pp.77-99.  Epub Apr 28, 2021. ISSN 0120-0062.  https://doi.org/10.15446/ideasyvalores.v69n174-66782.

The article presents a detailed reading of Spinoza's Letter 12, as privileged access to understand his philosophy. We emphasize that there is an intimate connection between the elaboration of his concept of infinite and the strategic importance of the work of distinction in his ontology. As the complex order of this ontology is the result of a philosophical effort to understand the real distinctions responsible for the internal diversity of existence, we argue that the Spinozian concept of the infinite is also constituted through a sequence of necessary distinctions, that we try to identify and explain.

Keywords : Spinoza; distinction; intellect; imagination; infinite.
