Abstract

CASAS RESTREPO, Francisco José. Is Saint Agustine's De Música a treaty about musical art?. Franciscanum [online]. 2016, vol.58, n.166, pp.117-145. ISSN 0120-1468.

Abstract The current article shows that St. Agustine's treaty De Musica has been traditionally considered as a text relative to musical sound art, but at the same time, it exposes the way in which this objective is significantly surpassed, transfigured and transformed in a highly sensitive reflection about the numbers and eternal harmonies by the author's preten- tions. To reach this conclusion, firstly, a thorough analysis of all the musical elements studied judiciously by St. Agustine has been executed. Secondly, the text and its changing direction will be examined, from the hand of the author, towards a higher goal, of religious, theological and mystic tenor in which the contemplation of numbers, eternal harmonies and the cardinal virtues concludes in God, seat of such realities.

Keywords : Music; rhythm or number; harmony; movement; God.
