Mathematical modeling research has led to a change in the curriculum of Education systems around the world. Recent studies show that the communicative process among students when they carry out complex tasks is an important variable during mathematical modeling. The main purpose of this research is to understand how these communicative processes influence the learning of mathematics when solving problems. Through the Activity Theory, we analyzed four students' representations as they solved a problem related to covariation between variables. We also analyzed the evolution of those representations through the use of a methodology that privileges scientific debate and self-reflection. Results show that the students' intuitive representations are functional and spontaneous, and can be modified by means of interaction and dialog in teamwork. This kind of work enhances equity during the knowledge construction process.
