Abstract

MONDRAGON-BARRERA, MÓNICA ALEJANDRA. Physical status and functional capacity in patients an intensive care unit: Effects of movement modalities. CES Med. [online]. 2013, vol.27, n.1, pp.53-66. ISSN 0120-8705.

Context: Prolonged immobilization in the critically ill patient, contributes to deconditioning and functional dependencies. Because of this, modalities of physiotherapy intervention intended to counteract this condition and its consequences. Objective: To determine the effects of passive movements, assisted, active and resisted, on muscle strength, joint mobility and functional capacity in patients in ICU. Methods: Between August 2011 and May 2012, were made electrogoniometry, dynamometry and functional independence measure in 23 patients in an adult ICU in Medellin who received physiotherapy in an intervention quasi-experimental study, before-after, without a control group. As the main outcome variable, we applied a Wilcoxon test to estimate the median difference in measurements mentioned. Results: Handgrip strength and FIM increase significantly, 5 (IC: 4 to 6.8) kg-force and 20 (IC: 12 to 37) points respectively. Joint ranges also increased variably in accordance with the joint evaluated. Conclusion: The kinetic modalities could be beneficial effects on the physical and functional capacity of critically ill patients.
