Abstract

HERRERA ATEHORTUA, Cenedith. From retreats, prestidigitators, circuses, cross dressers, cinematographers and bulls. Notes for a history of the amusements in Medellin, 1890-1910. Hist. Soc. [online]. 2013, n.24, pp.161-188. ISSN 0121-8417.

Because of some chronicles and local newspaper articles, the Medellin of late 19th Century and the first decade of the 20th Century seemed to be doomed to the lack of amusements. However, these same newspapers refer to the Sunday retreats in Bolivar and Berrío parks, to a number of different prestidigitation functions, cross dressing and circus, dazzling cinematography exhibits and bullfights. Medellin did have fun, despite the constant complaint of monotony pointed by the ''journalists'' of the time. The fun, which was not constant according to them, was the one that provided ''civilizing events'' such as theatre, opera and zarzuela -the ones that this article does not address- which, despite the overstatement, never lacked in the small and parochial town during 1890-1910.

Keywords : Medellín; amusements; shows; stage; audience.
