BARRIOS-VALENZUELA, Llarela Alejandra and PALOU-JULIAN, Berta. Intercultural Education in Chile: Integrating Foreign Students into the School System. educ.educ. [online]. 2014, vol.17, n.3, pp.405-426. ISSN 0123-1294. https://doi.org/10.5294/edu.2014.17.3.1.
The integration of foreign students is an ongoing challenge for Chile. Therefore, it is convenient to describe the current situation of intercultural schooling in the Chilean context and the elements that are considered crucial to promoting the integration of immigrant students. From an intercultural standpoint, integration is more than a question of accepting and incorporating foreign children and young people into Chilean classrooms. It also implies the inclusion of dialogue and cultural exchange. An in-depth review of the literature on the subject shows it is imperative that Chile establish public policies to promote intercultural education, not just bilingual education, but holistic intercultural education that responds adequately to the principles of diversity, integration and interculturality outlined the general law on Chilean education.
