This article addresses the nature, definitions, circumstances and meanings of the concept of biotechnology, and its implications for teaching. Approaching the emergence of this concept points to the manifold meanings and disciplines it encompasses, as well as to its complexity. Conclusions highlight the importance of researching into it within science didactics and the relevance of including philosophical, historical and epistemological aspects of biotechnology in the initial training of natural science teachers.
