In 2018, Colombia became a «Global Partner» of NATO, a development that, until now, has been analyzed descriptively. Such an approach is part of the traditional outlook that has characterized most analyses of Colombian foreign policy. The constructivist approach to International Relations can be useful for moving towards a more analytical perspective: it facilitates understanding foreign policy as a process influenced by rational, objective and subjective ideational factors; both internal and external. This article presents a critical approach to Colombian foreign policy with regards to security and peace, by studying the relationship between this country and NATO through a constructivist lens. The interaction between Colombia and said organization--based on technical cooperation, within the framework of a diplomatic strategy for security-has helped to consolidate the country's identity as, and interest in becoming, a partner offering knowledge and skills in that subject matter. This analysis provides a valuable input for the formulation of a comprehensive policy that responds to a changing and complex international context.
