Abstract

CECCHINI ESTRADA, José Antonio; FERNANDEZ-LOSA, Jorge Luis; GONZALEZ GONZALEZ DE MESA, Carmen  and  CECCHINI APPLEGATTE, Christian. Implementation of the self-determination model in elementary physical education. rev.latinoam.psicol. [online]. 2013, vol.45, n.1, pp.97-109. ISSN 0120-0534.

The aim of this study is to analyze the applications that Self-Determination Theory has on a Physical Education class. The class environment structured by the teacher as well as the relationships established with students will determine the degree of fulfllment of the basic psychological needs, the levels of self-determination, and in short, the afective and behavioral outcomes which were hypothesized on this paper. The sample was formed by elementary students (N = 459), with ages ranging from ten to twelve (M = 10.98, SD = .81). Taking into account the social factors as the predictable variables, a hierarchical conglomerate analysis was performed. Tree motivational profles evolved that showed different levels of motivational environment perception, diferent levels of collaborative learning, and diferent levels based on the choices made in PE classes. Afterwards, three one way MANOVA's were applied taking the motivational profles as independent variables, and the psychological needs as well as the types of motivation and the outcomes as dependent variables. The obtained results allow us to accept the formulated hypothesis. At the end, results are discussed and betterment proposals are given.
