Abstract

BERMUDEZ, Lilia Teresa; PAEZ, Andrés Felipe  and  RODRIGUEZ C., Luis Felipe. Socio-economic and environmental impact of the Irrigation and Drainage Project of the Upper Chicamocha Valley and Firavitoba, Boyaca (Colombia). Agron. colomb. [online]. 2010, vol.28, n.2, pp.337-344. ISSN 0120-9965.

By making water available to the farmers it benefits, the Irrigation and Drainage Project of the Upper Chicamocha Valley and the Municipality of Firavitoba was intended to shift the production mode of the region from extensive cattle farming to intensive horticultural production. Given that this investment has positioned the project among the most modern irrigation districts of South America, it is expected to transform the region into a highly productive cropping one. On these grounds, the current research aimed to identify the major impacts caused by the project, which was observed to have raised the income of the farmers through production and productivity increases, with the consequent generation of employment; two aspects that certainly contribute to improve farmer life quality.

Keywords : production; income; labor opportunities; life quality.
