Abstract

CASTILLO, Luis. AGRARIAN ELITES AND PARAMILITARIES IN MAGDALENA: THE CASE OF THE COFFEE SECTOR. anal.polit. [online]. 2023, vol.36, n.107, pp.224-247.  Epub Feb 18, 2024. ISSN 0121-4705.  https://doi.org/10.15446/anpol.v36n107.112567.

In this article, I propose that the relationship of rural elites with the paramilitaries was more complex than is commonly thought. Although there were sectors that were deeply and massively involved in the paramilitary experience, there were also others that abstained or remained relatively uninvolved. Taking as a case study the coffee region of the department of Magdalena, I show that the direct participation of its elites in the paramilitary phenomenon was very limited, almost null. I argue that this can be understood considering their relationship with the agrarian conflict and guerrilla violence.

Keywords : coffee economy; paramilitaries; agrarian elites; Bloque Norte.
