Abstract

TRONCOSO SEPULVEDA, Ricardo. Strategic Vote Estimates in the 2013 Chilean Parliamentary Elections. Rev.fac.cienc.econ. [online]. 2019, vol.27, n.1, pp.169-184. ISSN 0121-6805.  https://doi.org/10.18359/rfce.3509.

This paper estimates and assesses strategic voting behaviors in Chile, in the context of the 2013 parliamentary elections, using a sophisticated voting model to distinguish strategic and sincere voting through variables that capture the opportunity cost of voting for the first candidate, when this candidate has no chance of success. The results place strategic voting at 3.6 % and reflect that when making voting decisions, individuals consider the opportunity cost of a "lost" vote in terms of expected return.

Keywords : strategic vote; sophisticated voting model; sincere voting; opportunity costs.
