Abstract

COHEN-BALLESTEROS, Sandra; MENDOZA-POLO, Jesús; BORJA-ACUNA, Rafael  and  MARTINEZ-HERNANDEZ, Neis. COMPOSITION AND STRUCTURE OF SHOREBIRDS IN PUNTA ASTILLERO, ATLÁNTICO, COLOMBIA.. Bol. Cient. Mus. Hist. Nat. Univ. Caldas [online]. 2013, vol.17, n.1, pp.129-143. ISSN 0123-3068.

Composition and structure of shorebirds were determinated on Punta Astillero, department of Atlántico, Colombia. Six microhabits were selected (mangrove, mirror of water, edge of water mirror, silthy plane, slimy plain, and shore of beach). Presence and abundance of shorebirds were determinated in a fixed-radius (200m) plot on each microhabits. The samplings were carried out between January and March in 2011.Five monthly census was made for a total of fifteen samples. We registered 4214 individuals grouped in 18 species belonging the families Charadriidae, Recurvirostridae y Scolopacidae. The greatest richness (16 species) was observed in Silthy Plane and the lowest in Edge of Water Mirror ( 13 species) whereas the greatest abundance (1381 individuals) Showed the Edge of the Water Mirror and the lowest in the Silthy Plane with (191 individuals) The most abundant specie was Western sandpiper (Cabanis 1857) with 1055 individuals. The analysis of similarity test (ANOSIM) showed there are differences in community structure between microhabits sampled in Punta Astillero (R=0.414; p=0.01). These differences are due to microhabits characteristics, such as open spaces, vegetation and moisture from the substrate. It proofs that although Punta Astillero is a small area, it is an area which has a representative richness of shorebirds and therefore should be considered like protected area.
