Abstract

CASTILLO-R, Julio César; URMENDEZ-M, Deisy  and  ZAMBRANO-G, Giselle. FAUNA MORTALITY BECAUSE OF VEHICLE ACCIDENTS IN AN AREA OF THE PAN-AMERICAN HIGHWAY BETWEEN POPAYÁN AND PATÍA. Bol. Cient. Mus. Hist. Nat. Univ. Caldas [online]. 2015, vol.19, n.2, pp.207-219. ISSN 0123-3068.  https://doi.org/10.17151/bccm.2015.19.2.12.

The total of animals run over by vehicles in a 92 kilometers segment of the Pan-American Highway between Popayán and Patía was recorded through 50 samplings and 894 vertebrates were found, from which 362 were mammals, 288 amphibians, 186 birds and 58 were reptiles. The species that showed a higher frequency of being run over were: Rhinella marina, the only amphibious registered, and Didelphis marsupialis with 223 cases. Furthermore, by using the Kilometric Abundance Index (KAI), the sectors that showed a highest incidence of accidents were identified, with an KAI greater than 0.2, corresponding to La Cabaña-Timbío, El Bordo-Patía, Popayán-La Cabaña and Río Esmita-Piedra Sentada. Consequently, some strategies as potential solutions to minimize the risk of collision with animals on the Pan-American Highway are proposed here.

Keywords : effect of roads; run over; Pan-American Highway; wild vertebrates; kilometer abundance index.
