Abstract

JASSO-LOPEZ, Lucía Carmina. The recovery of public spaces in Mexico: An approximation to the public policies of situational prevention of crime. Rev. Crim. [online]. 2019, vol.61, n.1, pp.51-67. ISSN 1794-3108.

The public policy of situational crime prevention in Mexico is analyzed, in particular, the program Rescate de Espacios Públicos (The Recovery of Public Spaces). This program has been implemented in two periods of the Mexican government. This is defined as the intervention of parks and squares of coexistence to make them safer places. The main objective is to study the components of the public policy design, organizational structure, resources invested, and achievements. Finally, conclusions and suggestions are stated to strengthening the public policy. This analysis from the Mexican perspective offers elements of comparison and learning for other countries -mainly in Latin America-, which lead efforts in the prevention of crime through the intervention of public spaces, too.

Keywords : Crime prevention; urban space; public policy; government policy; public administration.
