Abstract

CUARTAS CELIS, Deiman; ZAPATA QUIJANO, Oswaldo; CARDONA ACEVEDO, Marleny  and  GIRALDO GIRALDO, Carlos Alberto. Medellín global: fragmentaciones del desarrollo en la primera década del siglo XXI. suma neg. [online]. 2011, vol.2, n.1, pp.31-48.  Epub May 30, 2011. ISSN 2215-910X.

This paper analyses the economic dynamics in Medellín from structural transformation and changes in local labor markets that directly influence the quality of life of the city inhabitants. The existence of a fragmented and disjointed development pattern is highlighted, noting that this development pattern is based on services sector led growth but under a regional export orientation that clearly favors the primary sector. Additionally, the paper addresses the weakness of the local industry and the institutional measures that aim at its strengthening, painting an overall picture of persistent social vulnerability that stems out of unemployment, low quality employment and informal employment.

Keywords : Firm development; cluster; employment; informality; public policies; structural transformation.
