Abstract

PINEDA ARBOLEDA, Juan Fernando. The Role of NGOS in the Response to Venezuelan Migration in Colombia. Desafíos [online]. 2023, vol.35, n.spe, e10.  Epub Mar 21, 2024. ISSN 0124-4035.  https://doi.org/10.12804/revistas.urosario.edu.co/desafios/a.12653.

Since 2015, migration NGOS have gained relevance in Colombia, contributing to a humanitarian response as the Colombian state was initially unprepared to provide comprehensive care to Venezuelan refugees. Despite their important role, migration organizations are understudied in Latin America. This article analyzes the role of NGOS in the response to the flow of Venezuelans refugees in the Aburrá Valley (Antioquia, Colombia). The research is based on interviews with NGO representatives and seeks to characterize and reconstruct the activities, formation, means and strategies of these organizations. The article shows that, in terms of characterization, there is a fundamental distinction between local NGOS and international cooperation NGOS; regarding their scope, the emergency humanitarianism model is central; while in terms of interactions, two categories of analysis were identified with regards to dealings with the state (coordination and complementarity), while partnership strategies with the private sector and the third sector also surfaced.

Keywords : Migration; migration NGOS; third sector; Venezuelan migration; refugee and forced migration studies.
