Abstract

ALOS, MARÍA JULIETA. El Petiso Orejudo by María Moreno: A Literary Look at Eugenics in Twentieth-Century Argentina. perifrasis. rev.lit.teor.crit. [online]. 2024, vol.15, n.31, pp.48-64.  Epub Jan 26, 2024. ISSN 2145-8987.  https://doi.org/10.25025/perifrasis202415.31.03.

In this work I address El Petiso Orejudo, a text published by María Moreno in 1994 and republished in 2021. I am interested in reading how, from polyphony, the novel questions and re-signifies consolidated "truths" about the figure of Cayetano Santos Godino. I observe that in this text polyphony is achieved through multiple procedures, among which I highlight the introduction of fragments of non-literary discourse, stylisation and verbal irony. Through the narration of the events surrounding the infanticide Cayetano Santos Godino, María Moreno's text makes visible, interrogates and problematises the practices and discourses through which eugenics was installed in Argentina in the first decade of the 20th century.

Keywords : María Moreno; Contemporary literature; Argentina; Cayetano Santos Godino; polyphony; generic hybridity; eugenics; biopolitics.
