Abstract

VAZQUEZ, Santiago. THE WORD AS THE MEANS BY WHICH THE GNOSTIC EXERTS A MEDICINAL ACTION IN EVAGRIO PONTICUS. Ideas y Valores [online]. 2021, vol.70, n.176, pp.75-94.  Epub July 20, 2020. ISSN 0120-0062.  https://doi.org/10.15446/ideasyvalores.v70.n176.70597.

The topic of healing by the word appears in the work of the 4th century monk-phi-losopher Evagrius Ponticus in various forms. Picking up on a classical heritage, the Pontine thinker attributes to the word a power to modify psychic dispositions. Among the ways where this healing power of the word can be realized, there is one of particular relevance that seems to address the deepest nature of what Evagrius himself considers to be the very illness of the soul. We refer to the word uttered by the one who is called, in Evagrian thought, "gnostic". The word of the gnostic, in fact, seems to be thought of by Evagrius in a therapeutic context insofar as it can contribute de-cisively to the cure of self-ignorance.

Keywords : Evagrius Ponticus; gnostic; ignorance; word.
