Abstract

AGUERRE, LUCÍA. CIVILIZATION AND BARBARISM IN SARMIENTO AND MARTÍ CONTINUITIES AND RUPTURES IN THE SEARCH FOR THE NEW POLITICAL SUBJECT. Ideas y Valores [online]. 2022, vol.71, n.180, pp.147-171.  Epub Mar 27, 2023. ISSN 0120-0062.  https://doi.org/10.15446/ideasyvalores.v71n180.88450.

This article analyzes the conflicting ideas of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento and José Martí about the binomial "civilization-barbarism", a core category of political and intellectual discourses of the 19th century, to explore their conceptions of the new political subject. The "enunciation contexts" from which they developed their ethical-political positions; the option for the "natural man" (Martí) versus the ideal political subject (Sarmiento); and the appeal and dismantling of racial categories in both authors. The study of these categories reveals a dialectic of persistence and abandonment of colonial imaginaries.

Keywords : D. Sarmiento; J. Martí; barbarity; civilization; nation.
