This article reports the results of a study of the organizational climate preferred by Brazilian and Colombian librarians in universities in Sao Paulo and Antioquia.  This survey forms part of a broader study on work motivation and organizational climate presented to obtain the degree of Doctor of Communication Sciences in the University of Sao Paulo.  The objective of this research project was not to determine the current climate in libraries but the climate that librarians desired.  In accordance with this objective, the librarians were presented with different elements that comprise organizational climate, with the request that they indicate those elements that they consider indispensable or of major or minor importance, as well as those elements toward which they were indifferent or considered of little importance.  The instrument used for this inquiry was a questionnaire that contained 35 situations related to the components of the climates investigated: objectives, structure, leadership, work relations, compensation, support mechanisms, propensity to change.
